EUROPE:

UK:

Pulteney’s Regiment (13th Foot) We are a UK based group re-enacting the period from 1739 to 1765 but specializing in the dates 1742-48. We aim to recreate as authentically as possible a unit of soldiers, and their dependants in King George II’s service and in so doing both entertain and educate the public.

The Mannered Mob [link] is the 18th Century Re-enactment Group that portrays civillian life between 1730 and 1760. We represent all levels of society from high to low, and our membership consists of both men and women who are primarily interested in civilian rather than military life in the mid 18th century.

Senior Service [link] is a historical re-enactment group, whose members aim to accurately portray members of the Royal Navy during the mid-eighteenth century, together with civilians of that time whose lives and trades were associated with the sea. We are one of the member groups of the re-enactment society Lace Wars, through whom we mainly participate in events commemorating the 1745-1746 Jacobite Rebellion and in other events linked to British history during the 1740s and 1750s (for example Britain’s colourful smuggling history).

The Historical Maritime Society [link] is a UK based historical research and re-enactment group recreating the Royal Navy.

Our main area of interest is the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. These were the exciting times around the year 1805 when Britain was threatened by Bonaparte and only the Royal Navy could prevent invasion from across the Channel. 1805 was the year when Britain’s greatest hero, Lord Horatio Nelson, sailed off to his fatal encounter at Trafalgar. Our aim is to educate and inform about shipboard life in the time of Nelson, and to have fun doing it.

CANADA:

Quebec City – August 4 – 8, 2010 annual festival
~Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France~
A wonderful festival celebrating the arrival of the French settlers to Nouvelle-France (now Quebec) in 1608. Every year, the festival attracts tens of thousands of people from around the world. Actors, performers, singers take part to bring this festival to life. Visitors are encouraged to dress in the French fashion of the late 17th, early 18th century.
(Although, most people wouldn’t know the difference; and you won’t be beheaded to be caught wearing 1750s attire. Just don’t show up in medieval garb, cause I’ll be there, and I know the difference.)
It’s alot of fun, and it’s held in the lower part of Quebec City (la Basse-ville), which still has original buildings from the 17th and 18th century, most of which now house little shops and restaurants. There’s a fabulous view of the Saint-Laurent river, and the atmosphere is fabulous.
It’s basically a dreamlike week-long 18th century escape, and it’s only $8 (CAD) for a week-long pass.

Fort Ontario in Oswego, NY – [link]

Although this fort saw more important action in the War of 1812, it was built in 1755 and was used during both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. It holds year-round events, but one must study the events calendar to see when the 18th century ones are.

Fort La Presentation in Ogdensburg, NY – [link]
While the fort here no longer exists (I still hear that a reproduction is in the works), this site holds one of the biggest French and Indian War reenactments in the state every year in July. It is a magnificent event, with reenactors coming as far away as inland Canada. The year we went, they even had a German company.

Annual reenactment (looks like it usually takes place at the end of August) to commemorate the Revolutionary War Battle of Brooklyn.

Tryon Palace in New Bern, NC
is a nice little place to visit. They have regular events and if you’re around during the first two weeks of December you can see the Christmas Candlelight tours, one of their bigger events. They have indoor tours with costumed interpreters, the palace itself is 1770s but the surrounding historical homes are 1830s constructions with their own set of interpreters.

Christmas Candlelight features outdoor entertainment with a sword swallower, a tightrope walker, Jonkonnu demonstrations, several musicians, an area to learn and play Lou and munch on gingersnaps and hot apple cider, and a period fireworks display at the closing of the night. Indoor entertainment features period dancing, meeting Governer Tryon and his wife, a ‘peak’ into a higher class cardgame with a singer and harpist performing period songs, and meetings with various people of the household. The whole of the palace is lit only by candle and torch light.

While the indoor tours are set up as educatonal vignettes, the outdoors are free-roam with set performance times. I know they’re always looking for volunteers, especially anyone with costumes of their own, if you would prefer a more participatory experience. And they are constantly improving on themselves after a few years of stagnation in the costuming area. Their new costume mistress is working hard to retire their old, inaccurate clothing and is doing so remarkably.

Also, in general, they have wonderful gardens all around the palace and behind it, and they have regular free garden days that are perfect if you’re looking for a beautiful spot for photoshoots. Check out their site and get more information at www.tryonpalace.org

The Greater Bay Area Costume Guild is having a Duchess of Devonshire Tea in February. Sadly the tickets are sold out for this event… but they are a good resource for events in that area.
